Você já ouviu falar na expressão “I can’t help myself”? em inglês?

Este é um idiom muito comum e é bastante utilizado, inclusive em muitas canções.

Mas o que será que isso significa?

Bom, usamos o “I can’t help myself” quando queremos dizer que não podemos evitar fazer ou sentir algo.

É como se você não conseguisse se controlar diante de uma situação mais forte do que você.

Veja alguns exemplos:

·  Every time I see chocolate, I can’t help myself — I have to eat it.
(Toda vez que vejo chocolate, não consigo me controlar — tenho que comer.)

·  I know I shouldn’t laugh, but I can’t help myself.
(Sei que não deveria rir, mas não consigo evitar.)

·  She keeps texting her ex even though she knows it’s a bad idea. She says she just can’t help herself.
(Ela continua mandando mensagem para o ex, mesmo sabendo que é uma má ideia. Ela diz que simplesmente não consegue evitar.)

·  He can’t help himself — every time there’s a joke, he has to tell it.
(Ele não consegue se controlar — toda vez que tem uma piada, ele precisa contar.)

·  She knows it’s risky, but she can’t help herself from taking chances.
(Ela sabe que é arriscado, mas não consegue evitar correr riscos.)

·  They can’t help themselves — they always interrupt when someone is talking.
(Eles não conseguem se controlar — sempre interrompem quando alguém está falando.)

É importante lembrar que a frase pode se adaptar aos diferentes tipos de pronomes, como exemplificado acima.

Nesses casos, é importante ficar atento à conjugação ao lado do pronome reflexivo correspondente:

Portanto, se você quiser dizer que “ela não pode evitar” o certo é “she can’t help herself”, assim como nos restantes. Veja alguns exemplos:

Eu não posso evitar – “I can’t help myself”

Eles não podem evitar – “They can’t help themselves”

Nós não podemos evitar – “We can’t help ourselves”

Podemos utilizar também essa expressão no passado, mudando o verbo “can’t” para “couldn’t”

·  He saw the cake and couldn’t help himself — he ate three slices.
(Ele viu o bolo e não conseguiu se controlar — comeu três pedaços.)

·  She knew it was wrong to laugh, but she couldn’t help herself.
(Ela sabia que era errado rir, mas não conseguiu evitar.)

·  They were trying to stay quiet, but they couldn’t help themselves and started whispering.
(Eles estavam tentando ficar em silêncio, mas não conseguiram se controlar e começaram a sussurrar.)
