Culpa | Como se diz em inglês?

Será que você já experimentou, pelo menos uma vez na vida, o sentimento de culpa?

Será que já se sentiu culpado ou quis culpar alguém por algo?

Provavelmente sim.

Mas será que utilizamos sempre as mesmas palavras em inglês para definir qualquer tipo de culpa em qualquer situação?

A resposta é NÃO.

Vejamos abaixo as possibilidades de dizer coisas parecidas, contudo de maneiras diferentes.

FAULT

A primeira palavra para definir “culpa” é fault.

Nesse caso, fault atua como substantivo dentro da frase.

·  It’s not your fault that things went wrong.
(Não é sua culpa que as coisas tenham dado errado.)

·  Whose fault is it that the project failed?
(De quem é a culpa pelo fracasso do projeto?)

·  She always says it’s my fault, even when it isn’t.
(Ela sempre diz que a culpa é minha, mesmo quando não é.)

·  I forgot the meeting — my fault.
(Esqueci da reunião — culpa minha.)

Normalmente utiliza-se essa palavra para definir que algo é ou não minha culpa, ou culpa de alguém.

BLAME

No caso de “blame”, temos duas possibilidades: a palavra pode atuar tanto como substantivo (culpa), quanto como verbo (culpar).

Blame (verbo)

·  Don’t blame me for your mistakes.
(Não me culpe pelos seus erros.)

·  She blamed her brother for breaking the vase.
(Ela culpou o irmão por quebrar o vaso.)

·  He always blames others instead of taking responsibility.
(Ele sempre culpa os outros em vez de assumir a responsabilidade.)

·  I’m not blaming you — I just want to understand what happened.
(Não estou te culpando — só quero entender o que aconteceu.)

Lembrando que, nesses casos, a palavra funciona como o ATO DE CULPAR ALGUÉM OU ALGO.

No entanto, também temos a possibilidade de blame no sentido apenas de culpa.

Exemplos:

·  He took the blame for the accident.
(Ele assumiu a culpa pelo acidente.)

·  Don’t put the blame on her — she had nothing to do with it.
(Não jogue a culpa nela — ela não teve nada a ver com isso.)

I accept the blame. It was my decision.
(Eu aceito a culpa. Foi minha decisão.)

GUILTY

Há também a possibilidade de sentir culpado por algo, ou simplesmente ser culpado de um crime. 

Nesse caso, usamos a apalavra guilty.

Sentido legal (culpado de um crime):

·  The jury found him guilty of theft.
(O júri o considerou culpado de roubo.)

·  She pleaded guilty to the charges.
(Ela se declarou culpada das acusações.)

·  If he’s guilty, he should be punished.
(Se ele for culpado, deve ser punido.)

Sentir-se culpado por algo 

I feel guilty for not calling my parents.
(Eu me sinto culpado por não ligar para meus pais.)

·  She looked guilty when I asked her about the broken glass.
(Ela parecia culpada quando perguntei sobre o copo quebrado.)

·  Don’t feel guilty — you did your best.
(Não se sinta culpado — você fez o seu melhor.)

·  He gave me a guilty smile.
(Ele me deu um sorriso culpado.)
