Estudando inglês, é muito comum que você se depare com os famosos verbos “turn” e suas variações.
Pois bem, no post de hoje falaremos sobre a diferença entre os phrasal verbs turn on e turn off.
TURN ON
Antes de mais nada, é importante lembrar que não existe apenas uma tradução para esse verbo. Então vamos lá!
A primeira delas é o “LIGAR OU ACENDER” algo.
Vejamos alguns exemplos:
- Can you turn on the lights? (Você pode acender/ligar as luzes?)
- I forgot to turn on the TV. (Eu esqueci de ligar a TV.)
- She turned on the air conditioner because it was too hot. (Ela ligou o ar-condicionado porque estava muito quente.)
- Don’t forget to turn on the oven before cooking. (Não se esqueça de ligar o forno antes de cozinhar.)
- He turned on the computer to check his emails. (Ele ligou o computador para verificar seus e-mails.)
Outro significado para a expressão pode ser “DEPENDER DE ALGO”
Veja os exemplos:
- Success often turns on hard work and dedication.
(O sucesso frequentemente depende de trabalho árduo e dedicação.) - The outcome of the game turns on the referee’s decision.
(O resultado do jogo depende da decisão do árbitro.) - Our plan turns on whether we get funding or not.
(Nosso plano depende de conseguirmos financiamento ou não.) - The discussion turns on the interpretation of the law.
(A discussão depende da interpretação da lei.) - His argument turns on a single piece of evidence.
(O argumento dele depende de uma única prova.)
Além dos dois significados acima, a palavra turn on também pode significar “ANIMAR-SE COM ALGO, SE EMPOLGAR”
Exemplos:
- She really turns on when she talks about music.
(Ela realmente se anima quando fala sobre música.) - He turns on whenever there’s a challenge to solve.
(Ele se empolga sempre que há um desafio para resolver.) - Some people turn on when they discuss their passions.
(Algumas pessoas se animam quando falam sobre suas paixões.) - Watching live concerts really turns me on.
(Assistir a shows ao vivo realmente me anima.)
Há também a ATRAÇÃO FÍSICA OU SEXUAL, que também pode ser traduzida como turn on.
Exemplos:
- She knows exactly what turns him on.
(Ela sabe exatamente o que o excita.) - Confidence and intelligence really turn me on.
(Confiança e inteligência realmente me atraem.) - That song has a beat that just turns me on.
(Essa música tem um ritmo que me excita.)
TURN OFF
O phrasal verb turn off também pode ter mais de um significado. O primeiro deles e talvez mais comum é a palavra “DESLIGAR”
Vejamos alguns exemplos:
- Please turn off the lights before you leave.
(Por favor, desligue as luzes antes de sair.) - Don’t forget to turn off the TV before going to bed.
(Não se esqueça de desligar a TV antes de ir para a cama.) - I always turn off my computer after work.
(Eu sempre desligo meu computador depois do trabalho.) - She turned off the radio because it was too loud.
(Ela desligou o rádio porque estava muito alto.) - Can you turn off the air conditioner? It’s getting too cold.
(Você pode desligar o ar-condicionado? Está ficando muito frio.)
A expressão também pode significar a PERDA DE INTERESSE EM ALGO.
Exemplos:
- Bad manners really turn me off.
(Maus modos realmente me fazem perder o interesse.) - I used to love that show, but the last season totally turned me off.
(Eu costumava amar aquela série, mas a última temporada me desanimou completamente.) - He was interested in the job, but the low salary turned him off.
(Ele estava interessado no emprego, mas o salário baixo o desmotivou.) - Her arrogance really turns people off.
(A arrogância dela realmente desanima as pessoas.) - I was excited about the trip, but the bad weather turned me off.
(Eu estava animado para a viagem, mas o mau tempo me desmotivou.)
Alem dos dois significados acima, turn off tambem pode ser associado à direçao.
Exemplos:
- Turn off at the next exit. (Saia na próxima saída.)
- You need to turn off the highway after two miles. (Você precisa sair da rodovia depois de duas milhas.)
- Turn off the main road and follow the dirt path. (Saia da estrada principal e siga o caminho de terra.)
- There’s a small road to the right—turn off there. (Há uma estrada pequena à direita—saia ali.)
- If you miss the turn-off, you’ll have to drive another five miles. (Se você perder a saída, terá que dirigir mais cinco milhas.)
